Evacuees at Beamish!
Year 5 had a brilliant time at Beamish last week, dress up as World War 2 evacuees, we headed over to Beamish to see what being an evacuee would have been like.
We had a tour of the farm, and meet the animals that we would be looking after if the farmer decided to keep us. We even helped out and gave the chickens some breakfast, there was even a baby chick running around the farmyard!
After that, we headed inside to do different tasks. We had to make our own straw matresses if we were going to stay, it was extremely messing (most of us were covered in straw by the end, even Miss Howson!) and it was 3 to a bed!!!
We also had to make some butter and cottage cheese...the old fashioned way! We had to keep stirring the cream to make it go thick, and squeeze lots of lemons!
And we had to make sure that we taped the windows with masking tape so they didn't shatter! Then we had to cover our torches with tissue paper so that German bombers couldn't see us in the 'Blackout'! Then we wrote a postcard home to tell them that we were safe!
After all that we were exhausted! But we really experienced what life would have been like in as an evacuee. We had a well deserved picnic lunch, then headed in the Town to see what else we could discover. We split into groups, some of us went around the shops and saw the mechanics and printers hard at work. The other group went to the sweet shop (where else?) and then they were lucky enough to see some sweets being made the old fashioned way!
To finish off a fabulous day, we headed over to the Victorian fairground and had a ride on the carousel! It was a fantastic trip and the children were an absolute credit to the school with their behaviour and attitude!
Well done Year 5 on another great trip!

World War 2 Detectives!
Year 5 have had a fabulous time learning about World War 2! We've had two different visitors who brought us different objects to investigate! Richard from Gateshead Heritage brought in objects and we had to guess who the person was and what they did using the objects to support our arguements!
We had lots of fun learning about Air Raid Precaution Officers, World War 2 housewives and evacuees. We also learnt about how they would have dealt with bombs, and spotting enemy planes!
Katie from Beamish also came in and we looked at evacuees. We had suitcases that we had to investigate, and then tell the rest of the class as much as possible about our evacuee.
Of course, we had to get into character!
We had lots of fun and learnt about the lives of different evacuees!

Captain America!
We had a very surprise visitor in Year 5 today! Captain America came all the way from Washington DC to see if we could help with a very serious problem...he hadn't forgotten how to jump! This was causing major problems as villains keep escaping him!
![]()
Captain America asked if we could help him, he neeed to know what was the best angle for him to jump at, and what was the best position to jump from building to building!
Of course Year 5 jumped at the challenge! We grabbed our protractors, metre sticks and rulers and headed to the hall to do some investigating.
![]()
Captain America then returned to see what we had found out and if we could help him! Luckily, we found out that jumping between a 40 and 70 degree angle was the best, and really bending our knees and swinging our arms. We went even further if we had a running start!
Captain America was very happy with our results, he reminded us to stay safe and stay in school! Great advice Captain America!
Captain America also helped Reception with their shape hunt with the star on his chest!

Mission Eggpossible!
Year 5 recieved a very mysterious email yesterday... a message from headquarters came through that the Egg of Rah had been found Egypt, we needed to assist the agents by building a device to stop the egg from breaking when they threw it out of the plane, obviously to stop it from being followed. There had been a fire at headquarters so their lab was out of action, and Year 5 had been chosen to complete the mission! We only had an hour and what we could find the classroom!
![]()
We made some excellent designs, we made parachutes and different containers to protect our eggs!
Then obviously we had to test them! Question was, how? Chuck it off the decking? Why not?
Some made, others didn't!

As part of Heroes and Villains week, Year 5 conducted some villianous experiments for their Changing State topic. Cola (liquid) plus mentos (solid) = ?????
Then we did vinegar plus baking powder...
A big thank you to the Year 5s who took the photos, they did a fantastic job considering they only had a few seconds to capture it!

Drama Drama Drama
it was all about drama on Friday in Year 5! It was our turn to write part of the Legend of Crookhill! We were given the fight between the hero and the villain, so to get inspired we did some role playing as a hero fighting a monster!
We had a lot of fun, but you will have to wait and see what we wrote!

Heroes and Villians PE!
Year 5 and 6 teamed up this week for some Heroes and Villains PE! We has the apparatus set up like building tops, and we had to move across them like either a hero or a villain! We also had to try to think about moving in different ways. Can you tell who we are trying to be?
We had lots of fun and found lots of different ways of being Heroes and Villains!

Laidley Worm Fun!
Year 5 have been reading the Laidley Worm in Literacy as part of our Myths and Legends topic. We had the task of retelling story...but through photos! We were split into teams and were given different parts of the story. We then had to think about how to show what was happening with words or moving! We used costumes and props to help us out as well. Can you tell what is happening???
Just ask Year 5 for further details of the story!

Disney movie magic.
Crookhill were in for a treat this morning as they were transported to the Magic Kingdom to listen to the Music Workshop perform music from some of the greatest Disney movies. We were given clues about the movies ranging from Snow White which was the 1st feature length film to come out of Disney Studios to a finale of Toy Story.
In true Crookhill spirit we joined in and even got to sing into the microphone.
Some of us were dressed as characters from the film. Can you tell which Disney Movie we are from?
If you look closely you will see Bashful, Sleepy, Happy and Grumpy. Can you tell who is who??? We played our parts well.
The whole school (especially the teachers) thoroughly enjoyed being whisked away into the magical world of Walt Disney. We can't wait for the music workshop to come back again!

Brilliant Basketball!
A massive well done to Year 5 who competed in a basketball tournament yesterday! Last Thursday, a member from the Women's Newcastle Eagles came to school and taught us how to pass, defend and attack in basketball! We then went to Gateshead Leisure Centre to compete against other Primary Schools! We did really well considering we were the only school who were completely Year 5! We won several of our matches and drew a couple as well! Miss Howson and Miss Byrne were very impressed by the team work, effort and sportsmanship displayed by our team, who supported each other throughout and could hold their heads high knowing that they did their best! Well done Year 5!

Amazing Australia!
Year 5 really outdid themselves in the last week of term! We created slideshows to persuade customers to go on holiday to Australia! Not only did we have to use our persuasive language skills, but we had to think about our layout, pictures and colour schemes...even animations! We worked in pairs through the planning, drafting and writing stages, there was some fantastic team work and effort, Miss Howson was very proud of everyone! Miss McCormack came into see what we had been doing all half term, and she was very impressed by our results! These are the fantastic slideshows we created!

Going Dotty!
Year 5 have been continuing on with our Australian topic! This week in art we created some traditional dot art picutres of Australian animals, first we drew our animals onto our paper, and then painted the outline in white paint. Using nothing more than colourful paint and cotton buds, look at our fantastic results!
Miss Howson is now hunting for a place to put them as she's run out of room in our classroom with all our displays! Hopefully, she finds a blank corner that needs a touch of colour!
For everyone's art work, check out the gallery!

Aussie Aussie Aussie!
Year 5 have been going all creative with our Australia topic! We put the finishing touches to our didgeridoos from Australia Day, we even managed to get a bit of a tune out of some of them!
![]()
We also finished our Aboriginal Shields, with traditional Aboriginal symbols and colours. First, we designed them on paper so we could plan out where to put our symbols, then we painted them onto card. They took a while to do because we had to add some of the dots and symbols after the first layer of paint had dried! They were worth it in the end though!
To see everybody's picture, check out the gallery!

Australia Day!
A massive well done to Year 5 who out-did themselves on Wednesday for Australia Day! We had 'I'm a celebrity' contestants, Steve Urwin, crickters, Outback Rangers and beach dudes and dudettes!
We made Didgeridoos with lots of Aboriginal symbols and designs! Whilst listening to some traditional Australian music...Rolf Harris and Men at Work of course!
Miss Byrne helped us to made Crackle Cakes, which are the Australian version of Rice Crispy cakes! We mixed rice crispies, marshmellows, sultanas and smarties and melted chocolate together! Miss Howson is never going back to normal crispie cakes she loved them so much!
Then after all that excitement we had a snack of juice and chocoalte muffins whilst we watched a little bit of 'Finding Nemo' since that is an Australian movie all about the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney! Then we trooped down to the ICT room and created some Aboriginal Dot Art Pictures! It was a fantastic day and everyone enjoyed themselves! If only we could have Australia Day every week!
For all the photos, see the gallery!

Mysterious happenings in Year 5...
On Thursday things became even more mysterious in Year 5, and considering we had Bob land in our classroom on Tuesday, we wondered what on earth was going on???
It all started outside the classroom...
It was all over the floor!
It was even on our tables...
The big question was, what are they?
Jay ~ They're Bob's eggs, we're gonna have hundreds of baby Bobs!
Ella and Chloe ~ They're flowers showered down from Bob's planet to say thank you for teaching Bob this week!
Megan ~ They're leaves from Australia that Bob has painted white
Andrew ~ They're Australian wedding flowers
Matthew St ~ They're rooflings that live in the roof, they've disguised themselves but are here to destroy us!
Lewis and Courtney ~ They're raindrops and snowflakes from Jupjup (where Bob lives)
Will we ever know??? We'll keep you updated on what else happens in Year 5...
Miss Howson
Year 5 have a visitor!
On Tuesday, Year 5 were very surprised to have a visitor! When we came to our class, look who we found above our whiteboard.
We had to think about who this visitor could be! We had a talk and decided he was Bob the Bobbox from planet Jubjub! He had landed in year 5 because we have been learning about persuasive letters, and Bob wanted to learn about how to write a persuasive letter because he is an endangered species on his planet and he wants people to help him save his kind! Luckily Bob decided to stay for the rest of the week to see what else he could learn! We popped him onto our books at the back of the room, so he could look through them and so he could see our whiteboard so he won't miss out on anything!
Play-dohing Around!
Year 5 were playing with play-doh this week! They hadn't been let off all the hard work we usually do, it was all in the name of RE! We have been learning about how the Bible started, and we learnt that the early Bibles would have been written on leaves, animal skins or in clay and would have been written in Hebrew or Ancient Greek. Year 5 took up the challenge and wrote Hebrew and Ancient Greek into play-doh to see what it would have been like! Fun and educational? Why not?
Ancient Greek, John 3:16
Jesus in Hebrew (written twice!)
Check out the gallery for more pictures!

Brilliant Biscuits!
Washing Line
Year 5 have been studying how best to get our clothes dry! Do we hang them up or throw the in a ball on the floor? And if they are on the line, how do we hang them out! And should we dry our clothes on a hot day? Or a hot windy day? There was only one way to find out...
Funnily enough, the cloth hanging flat on the line, with hot air blowing on it that dried the quickest...not the ball on the floor...hopefully Year 5 can now help out with the laundry!

Creativity Week!
During Creativity week Year 5 studied Islam. We celebrated Eid which is the festival after Ramadan. We had a Muslim feast and tried lots of new curries, rice and naan bread!
![]()

Everyone had a lot of fun, and we all had a try of the curries, even the ones we weren't too sure of! To see how much fun we all had see the gallery!
Coffee Anyone?
Year 5 have been studying the lives of Tudor sailors! We researched famous Tudor explorers, and then we created posters to persuade Tudor sailors to come on exotic adventures around the world and seek their fortune! We made posters for Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh! To make them look really old, we stained them with coffee! Our room smelled lovely all afternoon and strangely we were all wide awake..
