Y5 Visit St. Mary's Heritage Centre.

S8306375.JPGWe are examing WW2 artefacts and deciding who would have used them.

S8306377.JPG

Some artefacts were very puzzling.  These items belonged to the ARP, whose job it was to put out fires.

S8306378.JPG

Everyone was soon learning more about living during WW2.  The centre is a very exciting place to visit.

S8306381.JPG These were stylish glasses during the war years.   Wow!  Do you think they will be 'cool' in the future?

Checking our identity cards to see if we were spies!!

S8306216.JPG

Boarding the tram, who will look after us at the other end?  Will anyone take us in?

S8306221.JPG

We ended up on a farm with an enormous pig.

S8306231.JPG

We had to make our own beds using a huge cotton bag and stuffed with straw.

S8306234.JPG

It was quite comfortable, but scratchy.

S8306238.JPG

We had to tidy up afterwards.

S8306241.JPG

Jobs around the farmhouse included making butter and black out torches.

S8306250.JPG

We went into Beamish Town and visited the shops. S8306252.JPG

In the old school house.  Lessons were very different to what we have today.

Graphite Visit Year 5.

S8306303.JPG To get us all thinking we did a Recycle Zone quiz.  Did you know that it takes 17 trees to make 1 tonne of paper?

S8306306.JPG

Bravely we had to put our hands into the unknown and identify an object, then decide if it could be reused, recycled or reduced.

S8306307.JPG

S8306310.JPG S8306314.JPGAll the items could be reused, recycled or reduced.  Did you know, if we filled a queue of double decker buses with our waste paper it would stretch to Italy.  We were the first school to get that question right!!!

S8306320.JPG

'Graphite' separate the waste and process it ,

S8306321.JPG

We were all given a reuseable bag and Sue Coulson from 'Graphite' can be contacted on   0191 4615613 if you would like her to visit your school.

Sustainability Week in Class Five

Class Five had a great time during Sustainability Week! On Monday we researched how much waste is produced from packed lunches. We weighed the total amount of rubbish and then sorted it into categories such as - crisp packets, plastic wrappers and tin foil. Then we weighed each category and worked this out as a percentage of the total amount (aren't we clever!?). For this information we created bar graphs!

On Tuesday we learnt about the problem of e-waste. This is when rich countries, like the UK, send their old electrical goods to be disposed of in poorer countries like Ghana in Africa. We thought about this issue from lots of different perspectives - and then we held a debate! We decided the best option was for the goods like computers to be fixed so they could be used in schools in Ghana.

On Wednesday we learned all about Eco Schools.

On Thursday we learned from the examples of poorer countries and made some useful items from things that would otherwise just been thrown away. we investigated a range of musical instruments.

Miss Sharpe and Mrs Kirkland helped us to make some great musical instruments! During the afternoon we enjoyed working in mixed classes and taking part in the 'scrapheap challenge'!PICT0143.JPG

On Friday we created some lovely pieces of art work using recycled materials to create famous North-East landmarks such as the Angel of the North and the Millennium Bridge - look out for these framed beauties at the Christmas Fair! We also had a great afternoon with Zoolab learning about the importance of recycling and how to make our own mini-composts.

Tudor Trip - Class Five

On Tuesday Class Five travelled back in time to a Tudor Manor House at Washington Old Hall.

PICT0078.JPGWhen we arrived we had to get into our Tudor clothes - they were very fashionable!

PICT0077.JPG

We looked around the house and grounds and asked lots of questions. We had to try and get a 'job' to earn our keep - we all wanted to get our lunch! We had a woodcutter, a bird scarer and a spit boy to name but a few.....

Luckily by lunchtime we all had a job so that we could enjoy the feast in true Tudor style!

PICT0095.JPG

We were lucky enough to be joined by the Lord and Lady of the Manor - Lord Chambers and Lady Kendal. Don't they look the part?!

In the afternoon we enjoyed playing with Tudor toys and games - some were quite tricky and took a bit of skill!

PICT0102.JPGThen we created minature portraits, illuminated lettters and lavender pouches - which made us all very sleepy after a long day.
