Centre for Life

centre for life 002.jpg
During our recent trip to the Centre for Life in Newcastle we carried out an investigation to see if it is gravity or air resistance that affects how fast objects fall to the ground. We found out that it is air resistance that makes objects fall at different speeds rather than gravity.
centre for life 008.jpg
We used what we found out during our investigation to build our own rocket.

We tested out our rockets to see whose travelled the furthest.

Pen Pals

The excitement was building last week in year six as we waited for the postman to arrive. We were waiting for our first letters from our own pen pals!
We are writing to the year 5/6 class in Marine Park Primary School so we are looking forward to writing our replies and finding out a little bit more about our new friends.

Area and Perimeter Maths

Year 6 2012 411.jpg
Year 6 2012 410.jpg
We went down to the new outdoor classroom to investigate the area and perimeter of the leaves we found.

Pandora's Box

Today we have been learning about a Greek myth called Pandora's Box. We thought about how tempting it would have been for Pandora not to open the box; and how she would have felt afterwards when she realised what she had done.

The moral of the story was - There will always be hope!

Year 6 at the Forest School - Toasted apples and teepees.

The rain didn't put Year 6 off visiting the Forest School tonight. They got straight to cooking, exploring and constructing. Tonight we toasted apples and dipped them in sugar (for energy).

IMG_0358.jpg

We used the tarpaulin we put up last week (in all that rain) to protect us tonight when the rain was particularly heavy.

IMG_0360.jpg

IMG_0363.jpgWhen the rained eased off we treked to the far end of the site to build a teepee as an alternative shelter. We think it is amazing.

Check the gallery for the finished product. Mrs Murray will be updating it soon.

Year 6 Residential.

Year 6 had a FABULOUS time at Whickham Thorns and Gibside.
They completed a whole range of activities; some very scary, while others put their stamina to the test! The children were really well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, albeit a little tired by Friday! (Including Mrs Bradford and Mrs Adams!) There are too many photos to post here, so please look on the gallery for a better idea of just what year 6 got up to!!

Planting Potatoes!

As part of our Be Seasonable topic, Class Six have planted their own potaotes. We have had them wrapped inside some cardboard (from the Comic Relief noses!) and waited until little shoots started to appear.

DSCF2005.JPGWe then carefully planted them in the compost and have put them onto the decking area.

DSCF2010.JPGHopefully in a few months there will be lots of lovely spuds for us all to enjoy!

Heroes and Villians PE!

Year 5 and 6 teamed up this week for some Heroes and Villains PE!  We has the apparatus set up like building tops, and we had to move across them like either a hero or a villain!  We also had to try to think about moving in different ways.  Can you tell who we are trying to be?

Class Six's Assembly

This half term, Class Six held their assembly based on their topic 'Be Seasonable'. They presented a court case to their audience with a rather unusual suspect on trial - imported fruits!
S6300390.JPG

The children used their knowledge of discussion texts to present both sides of the argument.

They presented evidence against food imports by showing all the lovely fruit and vegetables that are in season throughout the year.
S6300395.JPG
They had a witness to support the arguments for importing food - the Farmer from Ghana told us of the importance that exporting food has in poorer countries.
S6300396.JPG

Earlier in the day we all helped to made a lovely seasonable soup. After the assembly we shared this with the parents who had come to watch our fabulous assembly. Well done Class Six!

Disney movie magic.

Crookhill were in for a treat this morning as they were transported to the Magic Kingdom to listen to the Music Workshop perform music from some of the greatest Disney movies. We were given clues about the movies ranging from Snow White which was the 1st feature length film to come out of Disney Studios to a finale of Toy Story.

DSC05467.JPG

In true Crookhill spirit we joined in and even got to sing into the microphone.

Some of us were dressed as characters from the film. Can you tell which Disney Movie we are from?

DSC05451.JPGIf you look closely you will see Bashful, Sleepy, Happy and Grumpy. Can you tell who is who??? We played our parts well.

The whole school (especially the teachers) thoroughly enjoyed being whisked away into the magical world of Walt Disney. We can't wait for the music workshop to come back again!

The Eagles have Landed!

Over the past week, Classes Five and Six have been having a very exciting time with the Newcastle Eagles.
DSCF6001.JPG
Last week they came into school to show us some of their super basketball skills. Class Five put these to good use at the tournament on Monday.
DSCF0011.JPG

On Thursday afternoon we enjoyed the 'Hoops for Health' roadshow which reminded us all of the importance of eating healthily, exercising regularly and never smoking to make sure we will always be super fit basketball players!
DSCF6004.JPG
Over the afternoon there were lots of prizes to be won including sweatbands, free tickets, t-shirts and even a basketball.
DSCF6006.JPG
It was fantastic to meet the players from the team and we wish them luck in their next game - maybe there will be some Crookhill supporters in the audience!

Stowell Street.

Today Reception and Year 6 visited Stowell Street for a Chinese banquet. Both classes have been learning all about China and Chinese New Year. We went to Lau's Buffet King to sample some delicious Chinese cuisine.

DSC04872.JPG

The staff in the restaurant were really impressed by our fantastic behaviour and attitude to trying new things.

IMG_0229.jpg

Can you believe some of us had more than 3 plates of food and then pudding?

DSC04848.JPG

Some of us were very brave and tried to eat using the chop sticks.

The year 6 children were great and helped the Reception children to fill and re-fill their plates.

IMG_0225.jpg

After our delicious banquet we went into the Chinese Supermarket to buy some decorations for our classrooms and to take home.

Take a look in the gallery for the rest of our photos.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

After lots of hard work last half-term, Class Six are very proud that tonight their articles all about our new school are being published in the Evening Chronicle! Make sure you get a copy! Well done Class Six!

Groovy Greeks at the Great North Museum

Seeing that Class 2/3 had such a great time, Class Six decided to follow in their footsteps and find out more about the Ancient Greeks!
IMAG0060.JPG
As well as the Ancient Greek exhibition, we really enjoyed seeing the T-Rex, the Egyptian displays and the virtual Roman wall.
IMAG0056.JPG

During our workshop, we found out if we had what it takes to be a Hoplite Soldier. Some of us even got to try on the specialist armour.
IMAG0051.JPG

As always, our behaviour was fantastic and we were a credit to Crookhill!

Class Six Trip to the Media Experience

IMAG0206.JPG
To support their work in Literacy and Topic work, Class Six visited the Media Experience this week to produce front page news reports.
IMAG0200.JPG
They expertly reported on some of the Ancient Greek Myths and were great editors of newspapers such as the 'Athens Express'.

The staff at the centre were very impressed with their final publications, and of course their behaviour.

Now Class Six are busy writing their articles for the Evening Chronicle's 'Our School' page - which is being published on Thursday 4th November!
