Sustainability Week in Class Five

Class Five had a great time during Sustainability Week! On Monday we researched how much waste is produced from packed lunches. We weighed the total amount of rubbish and then sorted it into categories such as - crisp packets, plastic wrappers and tin foil. Then we weighed each category and worked this out as a percentage of the total amount (aren't we clever!?). For this information we created bar graphs!

On Tuesday we learnt about the problem of e-waste. This is when rich countries, like the UK, send their old electrical goods to be disposed of in poorer countries like Ghana in Africa. We thought about this issue from lots of different perspectives - and then we held a debate! We decided the best option was for the goods like computers to be fixed so they could be used in schools in Ghana.

On Wednesday we learned all about Eco Schools.

Miss Sharpe and Mrs Kirkland helped us to make some great musical instruments! During the afternoon we enjoyed working in mixed classes and taking part in the 'scrapheap challenge'!PICT0143.JPG

On Friday we created some lovely pieces of art work using recycled materials to create famous North-East landmarks such as the Angel of the North and the Millennium Bridge - look out for these framed beauties at the Christmas Fair! We also had a great afternoon with Zoolab learning about the importance of recycling and how to make our own mini-composts.
