Fairy tale maths in Reception.

« The Pantomime. | Main | Gingerbread Man hunt »

This term we have been looking at Fairy Tales. To support our work with this in Maths week we have made our own Gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel.

We needed to make the right shapes for the walls. We thought squares would work best.

It was important that our walls were not too heavy so they would stand up properly. This meant decorating them carefully with sweets that were not too big.

We started off well trying to keep the decorations on our gingerbread house symmetrical. This didn't last too long!!!

We got a little bit carried away putting on lots of different sweets. We did talk about the sweets we were putting on though describing them by colour and size and some of us were able to count the sweets we had put on.

Rohan decided that we needed a cone for our gingerbread house chimney and felt that an ice-cream cone would be perfect. He was right.

In the end we think our 3D gingerbread house looks amazing.

To finish off the afternoon we read the end of Hansel and Gretel. "Nibble nibble little mouse, who is nibbling at my house?"

There was only one thing left to do!

Eat it.

We really enjoyed eating our amazing gingerbread house. A big thank you to Mrs Grant for helping us to make it!!!

It looks fantastic, although I'm a bit disappointed none of it made it home for the parents!!
