Stargate Mining Disaster Memorial
On the 14th September 2018 Year Five were invited to a very special celebration.
Last year the children completed a project on the Stargate Mining disaster, which occurred at 3am on the 30th May 1826. 20 men and 18 boys from our local area were killed in this tragic event. They learnt all about what life would have been like for the families in the area during the 1820s and created art work, poetry and stories to showcase their understanding and empathy.
For all of their hard work, the children were invited to take part in the unveiling of a memorial to commemorate the tragedy. This involved Liz Twist MP, Alan Cummings from the Durham Miners Association, Jill Green the Major of Gateshead and Terry Docherty MC.
Throughout the ceremony the children read poetry in such a clear and meaningful way it was fantastic to see.
As you can see from the photographs the children represented Crookhill so fantastically they were a real credit to you all.
Look out on BBC1 at 6.30pm because we may even make the news!
